Mirrors, Mirrors – Which One’s Fit for Your Bathroom Wall?

Bathroom mirrors serve multiple purposes, from helping you set your best look for the day to making your bathroom appear larger and stylish as well. A bathroom mirror is a vital element to every bathroom, so whether you’re looking to replace your old bathroom or you’re building your new home, here are some of the most important things to consider before buying one.

Types of Bathroom Mirrors

Wall Mirror – This is a general term used for mirrors that are mounted directly on the wall, and can be used in any area of your home. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes, with different types of frames or frameless, and in many colours, so you can easily find one that matches your bathroom vanity and bathroom design.

Mirror Cabinet – This is a built-in mirrored option that provides storage and allows you to keep many bathroom essentials and medicine in one place, reducing clutter and organising the space. They’re functional and aesthetically pleasing fixtures, crafted and unique.

Full-Length – This type of mirrors brings more light into the bathroom. Depending on the space available, it can be mounted horizontally over your bathroom vanity, or vertically across from a vanity mirror to create a feeling of a more spacious bathroom.

Lighted – This type of mirror brightens up the bathroom and offers optimum lighting conditions for different activities such as makeup application or shaving, especially in a bathroom with no windows. Large LED mirrors can be installed above the bathroom vanity, while smaller ones can be added as a part of a vanity set up.

Bathroom Mirrors’ Shapes

Once you’ve determined the type of mirror you need, you can search for the right shape that will help you create the perfect bathroom look.

Square – Square bathroom mirrors are the most traditional ones, but their shape allows to be mounted in many different angles and create a classic or contemporary look to your bathroom. Also, it can be helpful if you want to keep certain items out of the reflection, like a laundry basket or toilet.

Round – Round bathroom mirrors create contrast and enhance the bathroom elements, especially if they include angular sinks and fixtures. Depending on the space available, you can choose one or more frameless round mirrors in different sizes and add more dimension to your bathroom.

Rectangular – Rectangular bathroom mirror is the most common type used as it can be installed on your bathroom wall in many different ways, depending on the look you want to achieve. It can be mounted both horizontally and vertically, over a single sink vanity or a double sink set up. If you need to make your space larger, position it centered over your vanity and it will visually open up the bathroom.

Oval – Oval bathroom mirrors are the best choice if you’re going for an elegant look of your bathroom. They fit into narrow, small bathroom designs and can be installed horizontally or vertically. Oval mirrors can be found framed and frameless, and you can choose which option fits your bathroom interior.

Bathroom Mirrors Size

When looking for a bathroom mirror online or in-store, consider proportions as that’s the key element to providing balance to your bathroom. If the mirror will be positioned above the sink or the vanity, then make sure it’s not wider than the unit. When it comes to height, think of who will be using it and keep in mind that an ideal height of the mirror is one foot above and below the eye line.

Frame Materials and Finishes

Now it’s time to decide whether you prefer a framed mirror or a frameless one. Bathroom mirrors are available in both options, it all depends on your bathroom design, colours and your personal preference. However, if you opt for a framed mirror, here are the most commonly used material to consider.

Wood – There is a variety of wood framed mirrors, from classic, modern designs to rustic and antique. Whatever your choice, wood brings warmth to any bathroom regardless of the surrounding surfaces, like marble or tile.

Glass – Glass creates a beautiful, luxurious design that suits most of the materials and finishes used in bathrooms. Glass framed mirror can give a unique appearance to the overall look of your bathroom space.

Copper – Copper is another popular material used for mirror frames. However, it needs to be maintained properly and regularly, so it won’t turn green after being exposed to water for some time. That’s one of the reasons why it’s often seen in powder rooms.

But it’s not only about choosing your mirror frame. When it comes to framed bathroom mirrors, choosing one is not as simple as it may seem. You need to look for the right finish as well, and the following are some of the most popular options.

High Gloss – Glossy finishes will bring a sheen to your bathroom and reflect light as well. When combined with a mirror, a high gloss frame can have a very interesting and stylish effect on the bathroom.

Opaque – This is a term mainly used for glass frames, and sometimes for metal or copper frames. An opaque finish is not transparent and doesn’t reflect light, but combined with a reflective surface like your mirror, it will have a bright effect on the bathroom.

Matte – Matte finish doesn’t reflect light and is the number one option for adding a subtle element to shiny bathrooms. Sometimes it’s referred to as satin finish and looks great on natural wood surfaces.

Beveled or Non-Beveled – Beveled mirror has perpendicular cuts in the glass that add an edge to the surface, while a non-beveled mirror has a flat edge that goes right into the mirror frame. If you selected a frameless mirror, then it goes directly to the edge of the surface. When it comes to the aesthetic of these two options, your personal preference makes the cut.
